Washer Dryer Buyer’s Guide

Washer Dryer Buyer’s Guide

If you are moving into a new property or need to replace an existing washer or dryer, there’s that feeling of dread when looking at all the near-identical models trying to figure out the differences. Here is what you should look out for when buying a new model washing machine or tumble dryer.

Choosing a new washing machine

From Argos alone, there are eight models of washing machines within the £180-£200 price point. Making a decision between those, let alone those further up the price range can be tricky. The key things to look for are washing load capacity, washing functions and energy rating.

The more you can wash or dry at once, and with the speed options to suit your lifestyle, should dictate what model you pick. That will reduce the time you spend washing and drying, and allow you to get on with other things, while reducing the amount of energy you use over the years of their operational life.

Modern features in washing machines include WiFi connectivity for smart home remote control and improved noise emissions for quieter operation. Note that some features like top spin speed are only effective for very short periods of time and use more energy, but cost a lot more, so are not particularly valuable.

Choosing a tumble dryer

Tumble dryers have the same feature and price creep we see in washing machines, with new technology featuring in more expensive models that improve efficiency. The main feature to look out for is a vented or condenser model, where the heat is pumped out through a pipe in the former models, so you need a window or hole in the wall to expel it. In condenser models, dust and water are collected in a tray which you manually remove after a drying cycle.
